Annual Meeting of Working Group 1 on 14 May in Brussels
Working Group 1 on “Democracy, Human Rights, Good Governance and Stability” held its annual meeting on 14 May 2013 in Brussels in order to receive updates on the work done so far and to discuss future activities of the WG. The various sub-groups of WG1 on this opportuinity discussed their on-going work and to planed their strategy and projects for the future. The meeting was chaired by the Coordinator of WG1 and Co-Chair of the Steering Committee Krzysztof Bobinski and gathered over 50 representatives of civil society organisations from the Eastern Partnership countries and the EU. The meeting was opened by a presentation of Richard Tibbels, the Head of Division for Eastern Partnership, Regional Cooperation and OSCE from the European External Action Service, who briefed participants on the activities of Platform 1 and the prospects for the Vilnius Summit. Afterwards, the WG1 participants were briefed by Jeff Lovitt, the Executive Director of the Policy Association for an Open Society (PASOS), on the project on the monitoring of the Eastern Partnership Roadmap and discussed further activities in the monitoring exercise conducted by the CSF. In continuity of the WG1 meeting, an expert panel was co-organised by the Civil Society Forum and PASOS on the topic of “The European Endowment for Democracy – a driver for change?” with the participation of Jerzy Pomianowski, the Executive Director of the EED and Undersecretary of State at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Poland, Edward McMillan-Scott, the Head of the European Parliament Democracy Caucus, Vera Rihackova, Senior Research Fellow at EUROPEUM Institute for European Policy and Orysia Lutsevych, Robert Bosch Fellow 2012 at Chatham House. In the framework of the WG1 meeting a conference on fiscal decentralisation and its importance in promoting change and effective local democracy in EaP countries was organised by the Sub-group on "Local Government and Public Administration Reform".
