Georgia: The Eastern Partnership Roadmap to the Vilnius Summit Status ReportIN THE RUN-UP to the parliamentary elections in October 2012, the European Union delegation in Georgia worked to ensure trilateral dialogue between civil society organisations, political institutions (political parties, government, and parliament), and the EU delegation on election and post-election issues. The new government has broadened participation in the human rights dialogue in Georgia, and in a range of areas of legislation has increased engagement with civil society and business associations when drafting amendments to the law. The pre-election release of video footage of torture and ill-treatment by guards of prison inmates has led to prosecutions, but the elimination of the impunity of law enforcement bodies (particularly the police) is one of the areas where the new authorities still need to take decisive measures. |
