EU and COE step up cooperation in Eastern Partnership region

The European Commission and the Council of Europe step up cooperation on human rights, democracy and the rule of law in the six Eastern Partnership countries following a new cooperation agreement signed jointly in late December.

The Cooperation Agreement, totalling 33.8 million euros, is set to finance joint programmes for the promotion of democracy-building initiatives in the region. The package comes amid a new strategic framework for cooperation towards the region approved by the European Commission and Council of the Europe in April 2014.

“The significant increase in funding reflects the positive results which have been achieved through such programmes in recent years.” said the joint press release
