Council of Europe Decides to Withdraw from the Task Force on Human Rights Issues in Azerbaijan

8 October 2015

Council of Europe Secretary General Thorbjørn Jagland informed the Committee of Ministers yesterday that due to continued deterioration of the human rights situation in Azerbaijan, the organization is compelled to withdraw its representative from the joint working group on human rights issues in the country.

Despite the efforts of the Council of Europe representative who had been attending meetings in Baku to revive the dialogue between civil society and Azerbaijani authorities, the overall situation of human rights defenders in the country has worsened dramatically. The Council of Europe has received worrying reports concerning an increasing number of imprisoned human right defenders and “unacceptable detention conditions”.
