Georgian NP concerned over violence on International Day against Homophobia and Transphobia

The Georgian National Platform has issued a statement concerning the assaults on LGBT right activists and their supporters on 17 May, the International Day against Homophobia and Transphobia, in Tbilisi. During the day 17 people - including police officers and journalists - have been injured and some assailants have tried to rout the office of the LGBT rights protecting organisation Identoba.

The National Platform demands an appropriate response from the Georgian State following the numerous incidents and stresses the importance of starting investigations of the events as soon as possible. Furthermore, violators should be identified and criminal proceedings against them started. To better address similar events in the future, activities and trainings should be conducted in order to raise the awareness of the Ministry of Internal Affairs and Prosecutor's Office's officers on homophobia and transphobia.
