EaP CSF launches poster campaign on Political Prisoners in Azerbaijan

In light of the recent government crackdown on civil society in Azerbaijan, the Eastern Partnership Civil Society Forum has launched a poster campaign to raise awareness of important political figures currently facing imprisonment in the country. The campaign will focus on individual prisoners, giving an overview of their political activities, the fabricated charges brought against them and their legal situation. Several of the prisoners, including Rasul Jafarov, Leila Yunus and Anar Mammadli have been active members of the Forum in the past and vocal civil society representatives in Azerbaijan.

The first poster campaign focuses on detained civil society activist, Rasul Jafarov. Mr. Jafarov was an active member of Working Group 1 of the Eastern Partnership Civil Society Forum  and the founder of an unregistered NGOin Azerbaijan called Human Rights Club. He has recently been involved in the publication of a comprehensive list of political prisoners in Azerbaijan that was submitted to the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (PACE). He has also successfully led two human rights projects including the “sing for democracy and “art for democracy” campaigns, which aimed to expose government wrongdoing. His political activism has recently afforded him a nomination for the Sakharov Prize for Freedom of Thought 2014.

The Eastern Partnership Civil Society Forum calls for the immediate release of Mr. Jafarov, who has been arrested on fabricated charges connected to his campaign for the release of other political prisoners.
