Two Amnesty International Delegates Detained at the Border and Expelled from Azerbaijan12 October 2015
According to Amnesty International, two of its delegates, both Georgian nationals, have been detained at the airport in Baku while trying to enter Azerbaijan on 7 October. They were later deported by immigration authorities from the country. Amnesty said the deportation of its staff on 7 October "adds to a sad litany of journalists and human rights defenders being targeted, detained, and jailed simply for carrying out their work." This interdiction is one of the most recent measures Azerbaijan has taken to limit international scrutiny. The Organisation for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE) cancelled in September its monitoring mission for the November presidential election because of too many restrictions imposed on them. During the same time, Azerbaijan cancelled a visit by the European Commission after the European Parliament called on the Azerbaijani government to free the imprisoned human rights defenders. |
