EaP CSF Poster Campaign on Political Prisoners in Azerbaijan: Anar Mammadli

As part of a campaign to raise awareness of political prisoners in Azerbaijan, the EaP CSF has published a poster on civil society activist Anar Mammadli this week. Mr. Mammadli is the former coordinator of EaP CSF Working Group 1 on Democracy, Human Rights, Good Governance and Stability. Within Azerbaijan, he has played an important role as an election monitor, chairing the Election Monitoring and Democracy Studies Center and publishing a critical assessment of the conduct of the 2013 presidential elections. As a result of his contributions, Mr. Mammadli is a shortlisted nominee for the Václav Havel Human Rights Prize 2014.

Since December 2013, Mr. Mammadli has been a prisoner of conscience in Azerbaijan facing a sentence of 5 years and 6 months in jail. The charges brought against him are of fabricated nature and are widely regarded as connected to his activities as an election monitor and government critic in Azerbaijan. The EaP CSF has been actively advocating for his immediate release.

The poster campaign intends to shed light on the human rights situation in Azerbaijan. The first poster, published on 2 September,  was devoted to Rasul Jafarov, who has played an important role as a human rights activist in Azerbaijan.
